MG Review: 'Jim Morgan and the Pirates of the Black Skull'

As it is late while I start to write this review, let me preface this post with an apology and also with gratitude. My mind rises and sets with the sun, so this late post has been saved by my trusty online editor: I use Grammarly's plagiarism online checker because I am nowhere near as bright after dark as I'd like to think I am.

But this post isn't about me. It's about a book you should be reading, and then telling your friends that they should be reading, because that's what true book lovers do.

If you, like me, are tempted every time you see a world map to take a Sharpie and scrawl "Here be Dragons" over the ocean expanses, then author James Raney has a series for you. I just finished Jim Morgan and the Pirates of the Black Skull which is a sequel to Jim Morgan and the King of Thieves, and this is one book that I'll happily re-read simply for joy in the masterful prose with which is was written. The narrative voice is reminiscent of 19th Century London (which the author manages to make work very well even in a book for younger readers), and the main characters can be little darlings and little wankers all upon the same page which makes for a fantastic and fun read. Even at their most mischievous Jim and his friends are characters to whom any child can relate and hopefully learn to emulate.

Their adventures lead them against pirates and magic (in which a young reader learns that taking shortcuts always comes with a heavy price), and at the heart of all of their deeds is the lesson that friendship, family, and integrity always trump material gain. Even better, in addition to that mix is a brilliant and colorful cast of supporting characters ranging from enchanted talking animals to dragons and mermen.

Simply put, this book is a must read whether you are 8 or 88.

If you now find yourself wondering now who exactly are the Pirates of the Black Skull, you may prefer to first start by acquainting yourself with the King of Thieves. This diabolical criminal was the first monster young Jim Morgan was forced to face, after all.

HOT OFF THE PRESS! "Moonless" by Crystal Collier

Football season, schmootball season! Don't people realize that fall is also book release season? I'm thrilled to pieces to get to host another one of this season's awesome new books on the blog today. What do you get when you cross Supernatural with Jane Eyre? You get the killer paranormal historical romance "Moonless" by fellow author (and fellow cheese fiend!) Crystal Collier. Crystal was kind enough to share the top ten fantasy novels that most influenced her writing, so be sure to check them out at the end! I think I found a few new titles to add to my reading list ;-)

This book only released this week and critics are pouring love for this story already, calling it "...powerful, compelling, packed with soul," and that it "...transports us to a time of elegance and mixes in supernatural splendor that gives goosebumps." Are you hooked yet?

From the book cover:

Alexia’s nightmares become reality: a dead baron, red-eyed wraiths, and forbidden love with a man hunted by these creatures. After an attack close to home, Alexia realizes she cannot keep one foot in her old life and one in this new world. To protect her family she must either be sold into a loveless marriage, or escape with her beloved and risk becoming one of the Soulless.

So what are you waiting for? It might be cold outside, but this is just the thing to warm you back up so go grab yourself a copy, turn down the football, and treat yourself to a romantic fantasy unlike any you've ever read!

Top Ten Fantasy Books that Have Influenced Crystal's Writing

10. Paranormalcy by Kiersten White: It's rare I read a book with so much personality packed into its pages. I aspire to write a book with this much spunk.

9. Tiger's Voyage by Colleen Houck: Foreign backdrops, a new culture, even some historical content, I LOVED this book. Colleen tutored me in character relationships.

8. The Magicians Nephew by C.S. Lewis: This book set my mind on fire with cross-world travel an the importance of world building--especially in the real world.

7. The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare: If you want to know how to get 'er done as far as plot goes, you can't have a better pattern. Action takes a front seat. And the dialog? Whew!

6. A Swiftly Tilting Planet by Madeleine L'Engle: Again cross-world travel, but the importance of familial relationships really shines through.

5. Searching for Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede: A whole education on taking classic fairytales and molding your own world out of it. I still marvel about the mechanics of the Enchanted Forest.

4. Unenchanted by Chanda Hahn: A clever meshing of the Grimms tales and the real world, I adored how Chanda built relationships.

3. My Friend the Monster by Clyde Robert Bulla: The first story I ever read where a monster could be a good guy, this story left a lasting impression.

2. Another Fine Myth by Robert Asprin: Comedy meets fantasy. This series was my own brand of cheese merged with my first reading love.

1. The Windrose Chronicles by Barbara Hambly: Merge fantasy, technology and complex world building with an anti-hero, and you've got magic. This was the first time I saw THE bad guy (no questions asked) suddenly become the hero. Seriously, such a powerful transition that it's the only entire series I've read twice.

HOT Book Review - 'Strength' by Carrie Butler

The best part about offering to do book reviews is that sometimes you find one that knocks your socks off.

Welcome to my stop for the Courage blog tour, organized by Grapevine Book Tours.

Well, Carrie Butler's first book in her New Adult Paranormal Romance series did way more than that to me. Strength steamed, smoked, and melted my socks off! This series is shaping up to be an exciting ride that I can best describe as Mortal Instruments (though Butler's writing is FAR better than Clare's) as Michael Crichton might have written it: It's smart, it's full of twists, and the bad guys aren't always the ones you expect.

Her supporting characters are thoroughly entertaining and full of individual quirks. Butler certainly didn't skimp on developing them - I feel like I could have a conversation with any one of them! But her main characters, Rena and Wallace, I enjoyed for more reasons than I can count. For one thing, Wallace is a gentleman of the variety that has been so sorely missed in recent bestselling romance novels. In a genre that has been overtaken by self-obsessed jackasses who can barely make room in the mirror for their love interests and boy-crazy insecure damsels who spend most of the book worrying whether they behaved well for their ego-maniacs, this book represents a wonderful return to characters with integrity and inner strength (not to make a pun!). Rena is relatable and even admirable as she keeps a cool head on her shoulders and always seems to think of others first, no matter what difficult task lies ahead. This is one girl who doesn't know the meaning of 'Woe is me' and I absolutely dig that about her.

And let me go ahead and put this out there... I'm definitely crushing on Wallace. When you read the book you will, too, whether you admit it or not.

I don't want to give any spoilers so I'll stop there, but check out the awesomeness for yourself and get ready for the second book in the Mark of Nexus series coming at you this month! Courage releases on 10/15 and I personally can't wait to my next Wallace fix :-)

THE DETAILS

When college student Rena Collins finds herself nose-to-chest with the campus outcast, her rumor-laced notions are shattered. Handsome, considerate, and seemingly sane, Wallace Blake doesn’t look like he spends his nights alone, screaming and banging on the walls of his dorm room. Hell, he doesn’t look like he spends his nights alone, period.

Too curious for her own good, Rena vows to uncover the truth behind Wallace’s madman reputation--and how two seconds of contact had left her with bruises. Of course, there are a few setbacks along the way: guilt, admiration, feelings of the warm and fuzzy variety…

Not to mention the unwanted attention of Wallace's powerful, supernaturally-gifted family.

They’re a bloodline divided by opposing ideals, two soon-to-be warring factions that live in secret among us. When Rena ends up caught in their crossfire, Wallace has no choice but to save her by using his powers. Now they’re really in trouble. With war on the horizon and Rena’s life in the balance, he needs to put some distance between them. But Rena won’t let go. If fighting is what it takes to prove her own strength and keep Wallace in her life, then that’s what she’ll do--even if it means risking a whole lot more than her heart.

Carrie Butler daydreamed her way through college—until they thrust a marketing degree into her hands, slapped a summa cum laude seal on the corner, and booted her out into a less-than-stellar job market. Instead of panicking at the prospect of unemployment, she used her Midwestern logic to steer into the skid and point her life in the direction she really wanted to go: writing out those daydreams.

Her passion for New Adult fiction led her to co-found NA Alley—a widely recognized informational hub for the category. She is the author of STRENGTH (Mark of Nexus #1) and COURAGE (Mark of Nexus #2).

Welcome one and all for today's romp through time! I have the privilege of helping to unveil the cover for the brilliant upcoming novel by PK Hrezo: Butterman (Time) Travel, Inc and she even gave me carte blanche on creating the post that goes with it (my evil side always appears at the words 'carte blanche'). This blog hop is all about where and when we would go if we were able to book a trip through the Butterman agency and I think it took me all of about 2 seconds to decide my destination. 2003, here I come...

"Ms. Chappell, you're absolutely, totally, utterly, perfectly clear that you've signed a binding agreement not to attempt to alter events in your chosen time destination, correct?" Bianca Butterman asked me for the third time as I signed the final waivers on my vacation package. She must have seen the glint in my eye because she was definitely getting suspicious.

"Absolutely," I answered, hoping that nervous squeak in my voice sounded innocent. I added on my sweetest smile and doe eyes; with any luck she'd think I was just another naive fangirl hoping for a thrill. "Really, this moment just had such a HUGE impact on my life and I never felt like I had any closure. There were so many questions left unanswered, and I just feel like if I see it for myself maybe I'll finally be able to let go."

Bianca's eyes narrowed. "Just please remember that you will be held financially, ethically, and cosmically liable for any Paradox Factors your actions might cause," she said as though she were already tallying up the charges against me. PFs were a big deal now that time travel was the norm; however, the permanent damage to my psychological well being was a pretty big deal to me, too. I'd decided months ago that it was worth the risk.

"Of course I will," I said with a little giggle. Too much? Maybe, but I never was much of an actress.

"Fine," Bianca finally sighed and opened the folder with my travel papers. Even if she didn't believe me, she obviously couldn't prove I was up to anything. Score! "Everything you need is right here. Your character is an office temp with very little experience so they won't be surprised if you don't seem to know what to do. Just try to stick with the coffee and bagels and everything should go smoothly. Here is your ID to get you into the building. Your guide is disguised as a janitor and he will always be within earshot. Or armshot if he needs to be," she added and just about leveled me with her glare. "This is a Nokia cell phone appropriate to the year with the company emergency line programmed in at #1. Dialing that number will get you an immediate extraction. Are we clear?"

"As a bell!" I said cheerily.

"Then I hope you enjoy your trip to 2003 and Fox Studios, Ms. Chappell. At Butterman Travel, we're always here to give you the time of your life," she shoved the folder with the badge in my hands and pointed me toward the door to begin my trip. As soon as the door closed, Bianca rang down to Operations. "Joe, your next client is in the tube. Don't let this one out of your sight; she's got a smile that just screams 'lunatic.'"

***

"Hey you, bagel girl!"

The office witch snapped her fingers in front of my face and I resisted the urge to break them. Barely. "Yes? Can I help you?" I asked, tearing my eyes away from the network executive board room. Joe, the janitor who was my guide was taking a suspiciously long time to mop the equally suspicious spill that just happened to be between me and the door. I had to find a way to get around him; they were already getting started!

"I asked if you were deaf or stupid, but I think I already know the answer to that one," barked the office witch. No wonder this place went through so many temps. "Ms. Watson called for a coffee five minutes ago and yet you're still standing here with your mouth open. Get going!"

I grunted and wheeled the cart toward Ms. Watson's office in the exact opposite direction from where I needed to be if I was going to save the world from television peril. A casual glance over my shoulder showed me Joe still mopping the floor, a feat which must have been a lot harder to do with both of his eyes focused on me walking away. If I didn't know better, I'd swear he was a candidate for sexual harassment. At Ms. Watson's office I found a shrew no sweeter than the office witch.

"Is that finally my non-fat gluten-free latte I hear coming through my door?" She asked without looking up from her screen. I imagined she was probably too busy cancelling beloved children's shows in true Fox fashion.

"Yes, ma'am," I said glumly, glancing behind me again.
"Then bring it over here, for chrissake! Just set it on the coaster, and don't forget the lid this time! The last girl forgot the lid and coffee got absolutely everywhere."

"Yes.... ma'am!" I said as a plan sprang to life. I put the coffee down and I didn't forget her precious lid. But she hadn't said anything about making sure the lid was firmly attached, had she?

I was half-way back to the coffee station and barely suppressing a smile when I heard her scream. "Ugh! Stupid, stupid girl! Janitor, get in here now!!!"

It was time to make my move!

***

Meanwhile, Inside the Board Room...

"Seriously Bill, you can't compare a show like this to Star Trek. That was a show with class and with a classy following. The fan mail we're getting for this, frankly, it's a little scary."

"Alright, Clint, I get what you mean," Bill said, reaching for his vegan mocha grande. "Sure, it might be the comic fringe and the obsessive nerd crowd, but c'mon... a following is a following."

"I think Bill makes a good point," said the bookish lady across the table, trying not to reveal her secret fandom. "There's still money to be made off this franchise. Besides, they have a tiny budget for a sci-fi show. What could it hurt to keep it on the schedule?"

"But it's just so weird," said Clint with a frown. "Cowboys in spaceships? If anything, it's a cultish fad. I say we cash out and get out before it ends up costing us advertisers."

"I don't know," said the quiet man at the head of the table. "Joss has never failed us before and I don't want to do anything that will damage our relationship. I'm going to need a better reason than a disruptive fanbase before I cancel one of his shows."

***

Joe was hot on my heels already. By the time I reached the double doors I knew I only had about 10 seconds to do what had to be done. I slammed the bagel cart through them and leaped on top of it - dammit, I shouldn't have worn a dress - and made sure I had every network board member's attention before I screamed at the top of my lungs:

"YOU CAN'T TAKE THE SKY FROM ME! YOU CAN'T CANCEL IT, EITHER! WHEDON FOREVER!!"

Then Joe grabbed me from behind and dragged me to the lobby where Security was already on the way to escort us out of the building. Bianca Butterman was probably going to ban me from time travel forever, but I didn't care - I knew I'd gotten through to them!

***

"That's exactly the kind of nonsense I'm talking about," said Clint, wiping the goat cheese from his sleeve. Not an inch of mahogany or imported carpet had been spared from bits of pastry and free trade organic coffee. "Is that the kind of image the Network wants for its viewers? If the D&D crowd is what you want, then you can probably kiss the Abercrombie and Nike ads goodbye."

"Alright," sighed the director. "I was dead set against canceling it, but now I see your point. Firefly has to go."

"Great!" Said Clint. "Now we can talk about putting a real show in its slot. I had an idea for a great Joe Millionaire spinoff..."

TILT News and Trailer Release!

If I could do back flips without earning a trip to the ER, I'd be doing them all the way down the street. Possibly even in heels. Why am I so excited?

For starters - MY SEQUEL COMES OUT IN 2 WEEKS!! Honestly, waiting for this second book has been in some ways far harder than the first. Partly because I finished it in February (which feels like YEARS ago right now), but partly because this time around I know more about what to expect from a book launch and I'm dying to take the bull by the horns. And even though it really, totally, and uber-completely feels like it sometimes, I have at least finally come to the conclusion that I won't actually die from the anticipation.

That Never-Ending Moment of Anticipation

The other reason for my excitement also led to another realization: Inspiration is the bitter ex-wife of the Sandman. I'd decided long ago that I wasn't going to do a book trailer for TILT because it takes such a huge chunk out of my already limited writing time (and I'm making headway on the 3rd book!). It takes time to write the script, research images/video, find music, get the narration worked out...  You get the picture. And, to be honest, I wasn't 100% convinced of the merit of book trailers.

But that's where the vengeful Inspiration and the dysfunctional relationship with her estranged ex come into play. Last Thursday night I was happily drifting off to sleep when suddenly the thought hit me: "If I were to make a trailer, how would I tell the story?" By the next morning I had - in addition to bags under my eyes - a working script in mind along with image concepts that I was bent on spending the next night refining. Then I got the thread of a song in my mind that I could make work perfectly with the narration. Long story short, after 24 hours of work in one frenzied weekend I managed to compose and record a piano score, write and record the narration, assemble and edit the video, and then drink happy amounts of beer to celebrate.

And now I have the pleasure of sharing with you the little book trailer that refused to not be made.

FREEBIE ALERT BELOW!

I hope you enjoyed the trailer! As another part of the launch festivities, ALICE WILL for Kindle will be FREE from October 10th to October 14th! If you haven't downloaded your copy yet, mark it on your calendar to get your copy in two weeks

Writing Lesson #1: Publishing is NOT the Endgame

It's been over a year and a half now since I signed my first publishing contract and 9 months since my very first book - my baby - was first introduced to the world. Since these dreams of mine finally came true I've been running full speed with writing, marketing, planning and obsessing over every tiny detail during every free moment I had. (Notice blogging didn't make that list? Bad Ashley.) Now with my 2nd book coming out in 2.5 months and planning a super-secret standalone book release for the spring (oops! Not so secret now ;-)), I'm spinning faster than ever.

Long List
Sometimes it grows on its own...
Finally something hit me the other day while I was fretting over a long writing To-Do list: A big part of the reason that list is so long is because I have learned SO MUCH since I started down this road. When I first decided to make writing a career my To-Do list looked about like this:
  1. Write a book.
  2. Write a query letter.
  3. Get published.
  4. Make money and be fabulous.
Those were the early rose-colored glasses days. It took longer than I'd like to admit to pull my head out of my ass and start figuring out what launching a writing career would actually take. In fact, I wrote THREE books before I got out of the Step 1 loop. And that's when I discovered that there are actually about 573 things to do before you can get from Step 2 to Step 3 and another 1,897,203 things to do before you can see Step 4 even with help from Hubble.  It's a common myth that getting published is the end of a writer's work. Wrong! Getting published is just the beginning.

Now my To-Do lists look more like this:
  1. Finish 4th revision of WIP
  2. Set up MC's plight for sequel
  3. Choose Artwork for Con Ad (Get bleed sizes!)
  4. Edit video from book reading for website/Get stills for Media Kit
  5. Update Quicken with receipts from Book signing
  6. Follow-up with book store for dates for next signing
  7. Finish guest app for Con
  8. Schedule and write guest blog post
  9. Pick music for book trailer
  10. Oh yeah... WRITE
And that's just a sample To-Do list for a week. It turns out there is so much more to writing than just writing. This was the first lesson that I had to accept about the writing business. It can seriously make me feel a little crazy at times when I really let myself think about the tasks and the work ahead, especially when I think about doing it in conjunction with a full time day job (gotta pay for my writing fix somehow, don't I?). But here's the secret that keeps me going:
It's worth every nail-biting, head-banging, hair-pulling second to see my books in print.

I don't know a single author who wouldn't say the same thing. There's no room for getting discouraged because at the end of the day you're still doing what you love. How many people can say that? Next week I'll share some of the happier lessons I've learned while writing, but for now I'm just going to go cross this one more thing off my To-Do list...

Good advice, hot men
Good advice. Hot men.

Fat-Free, Low Cal Twitterview - The Transcript!

On June 29th I had the opportunity to do my first Twitter-based interview with my publisher, Center One Publishing (C1 Books). It was fast and furious all the way through and I credit Gevalia Coffee for my ability to some how keep up with all of the questions from C1 as well as from readers. I didn't have a chance to talk much about Tilt, the sequel to Alice Will that releases in October, but I can save that for the next adventure in the Twittersphere!

I think Twitter gets a bad rap sometimes as being too limiting and for forcing our beautiful language into a trash compactor of text slang, and I'll admit I've been a pretty big critic of it in the past. But for the purposes of this interview I was pleased that it forced me to trim the fat out of my responses and get to the point.

So please enjoy the transcript of the interview below and know that what you're seeing is as cut and dry as I'll possibly ever be; trimmed-down, scaled back, and without even the extra butter on the side. I won't say I left off the cheese, though... :-)

Welcome to today’s chat with Ashley Chappell author of Alice Will #c1books

Hello, everyone! I can't wait to chat with all of you :-)#c1books

Feel free to ask questions while we do, Ashley it's great to have you here! #c1books

Alright Ashley the question we all want to know, how much of your book did your cats write? #c1books

@Justin_Dine Ha! They would claim all of it since they were at least touching the laptop while I wrote #c1books

@Justin_Dine But I only give them credit for Prowler's happy ending ;-) #c1books

When naming your characters, do you give any thought to the actual meaning? #c1books

@C1Books ? I try to fit the name to the character most of all #c1books

@C1Books The right name can help convey an image of strength, shyness, clumsiness, loveliness, etc. #c1books

I was curious if you tried to stay away from the romance aspect with your book Alice Will? By the way I loved it! #c1books @AshleyNChappell

@larabookvampire Thank you so much! Trotter's development influenced that decision for me. Her isolation was a big factor in her. #c1books

@larabookvampire But without spoilers, there might be an early hint of a love interest in the next book ;-) #c1books

Describe your writing style in ten words or less. #c1books

Hmmm... Darker fantasy with a dry dose of humor and satire #c1books

What’s the earliest memory you have of writing a story? #c1books

I was 5 when I wrote my first story “Super Car.” My father drew illustrations for it which I still treasure. #c1books

It didn't make it out of the playground, but I still felt like a real writer for it. Even at only 3 pages :-)

@AshleyChappell What inspired you to write the most? #c1books

@SkittyPandora Legitimizing my constant daydreaming? ;-) #c1books

@SkittyPandora Really, I think if I didn't write down where my imagination went I'd eventually explode. #c1books

@AshleyNChappell After your book was published, was there anything you would have wanted to change still? #c1books

@Lisa_Cray Oh yes! Mostly specific writing, not story elements. But I think all writers want constant 'do-overs' with their books. #c1books

What is your least favorite part of the writing process? #c1books

@C1Books Editing and more editing! Specifically making myself change a major element when I know it isn't working. #c1books

Who is your favorite author and is you writing style similar to theirs? #c1books

@RebekahMcClew Terry Pratchett. My writing isn't lyrical as his can be, but I tend to fall into a similar satirical voice. #c1books

@RebekahMcClew He's always my inspiration when I'm feeling blocked :-) #c1books

@AshleyChappell Do you have any advice for new, young authors? #c1books

@Bubblez44445 Never stop writing! You learn from each project you finish. Even criticisms that hurt sometimes offer good advice #c1books

As an Author, if you were stuck on an island, what would you want with you? No limit on items #c1books

@MasonLinden No limit? In that case, a laptop with an internet connection and Amazon Air Delivery :-) #c1books

@MasonLinden It would save the book-packing beforehand ;-) #c1books

Was becoming an author a goal of yours or an after effect? #c1books

@Lisa_Cray It's what I've wanted as long as I can remember. All of my dayjobs have essentially
supported this dream. #c1books

@AshleyNChappell Imagine your characters are on survivor. Who will they vote out of the book?#c1books

Probably Pratt(s). That would knock out 4 characters with one vote! #c1books

Not to mention Pratt(s) is/are something of a McGuyver ;-) #c1books

@Ashleynchappell Do you have a particular favorite character in Alice Will? I loved Prowler #c1books

@larabookvampire I was attached to Prowler, too! But my fiance swear's I'm Trotter to a 'T'. #c1books

Truthfully, I do envy Trotter's smiting finger at times... #c1books

@AshleyNChappell Scariest thing you have ever read/written #c1books

Easy! Steven King’s The Shining will always scare me no matter how many times I read it. It OOZES psychological terror. #c1books

@AshleyNChappell Name a topic that you refuse to write about. #c1books

@RebekahMcClew Two things - Like you, I won't write pornography. But I also won't write about my personal beliefs #c1books

My writing is not a platform, but I hope it will still challenge readers to think. #c1books

How long did it take to write Alice Will and did you find it frustrating at all? #c1books

@MasonLinden Alice was my pride and joy - I wrote it in only 4 months. It's the only book that's been more exhilarating than not #c1books

When you write do you concentrate more on just the story or does work count affect your writing? #c1books

@larabookvampire Word count does drive me a good bit for goals, but not overall length #c1books

@larabookvampire My characters let me know when it's time to wrap up. #c1books

@AshleyChappell Do you have any strange writing quirks? #c1books

@SkittyPandora Only 1 real quirk... Like Eric, I need quiet to write. But when I get stuck I talk it
through out loud to myself. #c1books

@SkittyPandora Which is probably why I can't write in public. They'd haul me off in a straight jacket! #c1books

@AshleyChappell Which character do you feel that you relate too the most? #c1books

@Bubblez44445 I have to give him credit, my fiance is right. I am totally Trotter! #c1books

@Bubblez44445 Working in the government can give you that toothache for illogicisms ;-) #c1books

@AshleyNChappell Your favorite monster/villain. #c1books

My favorite monster has always been the monster within ourselves #c1books

Most of my characters struggle with inner demons and darkness before they can grow/succeed. #c1books

@AshleyNChappell Is it hard for you to stop writing, or are you able to pick up where you left off without problems #c1books

Sometimes I struggle with balance. If it's been more than a week since I've been able to write I have a very hard time starting. #c1books

I find, though, that if I start out re-reading the previous chapters I can get the rhythm back. (Not to mention some editing!) #c1books

@AshleyNChappell What inspired you to create the character Trotter? #c1books

@Lisa_Cray Trotter was in part a response to the traditional good-looking, super-cool teen demi-god in this genre... #c1books

@Lisa_Cray I wanted to create a character that was everything else - awkward, uncomfortable in her powers, and lonely. #c1books

@ashleynchappell Do you ever get nervous when family and friends read your book? #c1books

@larabookvampire Every single time! Although family and friends tend to be more generous than a stranger :-) #c1books

@AshleyNChappell How do you work with an editor without the pride thing getting in the way? #c1books

It's not bad. The only time I feel irked is when I get edits that are actually incorrect. It happens to the best of us, though! #c1books

If you could ask yourself a question about writing Ashely what would it be? #c1books

@Justin_Dine Probably 'Why the heck didn't you try harder sooner?!?' Then I'd kick myself in the pants a bit for good measure :-) #c1books

Now if I could ask ANY author, I'd ask how they get through writer's block. #c1books

@AshleyChappell Who do you want to be reading your book, and who do you expect to be reading it? (Age groups ect.??). #c1books

@SkittyPandora I think teen girls are probably the likeliest readers, but I love hearing that middge grade readers pick it up, too #c1books

@SkittyPandora But most of the people that enjoy it also enjoyed The Golden Compass and other alternate universe concepts #c1books

So how do you get through 'writers block'? #c1books

@Justin_Dine Darn it, that was for them! Not me :-) #c1books

Come on you knew I was going to do that ;) #c1books

@Justin_Dine But usually I try wine (although, to be honest, it really doesn't help the writing, just the anger about not writing!) #c1books

How fast/slow do you write? Or do you try not to notice? #c1books

@Justin_Dine If I'm on a roll, I'll knock out 5K - 7K words in a session. But on slow days I'm happy for 500 in 8 hours. #c1books

@Justin_Dine Honestly, I celebrate ANY word count sometimes. #c1books

And what is your idea writing situation/setup? #c1books

@Justin_Dine I've planned this out entirely! It will be a hobbit hole in the woods with a recliner, 3 monitors and tea! #c1books

@AshleyNChappell And it wouldn't be the same without the cats nearby. #c1books

I would love to have a third monitor, wife won't let me! #c1books

If I let him Justin would have 8 monitors, they just keep adding up! #c1books

On scale of 1 to 10 how real are your characters to you Ashley? #c1books

@Justin_Dine Whole-hearted 10. I live with these guys, and don't think I'm kidding when I say they argue with me. #c1books

If you could have dinner with one person, alive or dead, who would it be? #c1books

@C1Books Sir Terry Pratchett! Although I'd probably waste most of it by squealing, repeating 'OMG', and ultimately fainting. #c1books

I squealed enough when I got a signed book of his without even actually meeting him... #c1books

Would you live in your world if it was possible? And no I don't mean the type of live in your world that results in the white coat #c1books

@Justin_Dine Definitely on the first part! On the 2nd, what makes you think I don't? They let me out for the interview :-) #c1books

But if I had to choose between Aevum, the Wedge, or Realm, I think I'd have to choose The Wedge for ambience #c1books

@AshleyNChappell Do you outline? #c1books

@C1Books I do. Then I write, scrap that outline, make another, write more, scrap that outline, make another... #c1books

Do you ever find yourself acting out a scene from your book before you can write it? #c1books

@Justin_Dine Not actually acting out, but when I talk it through I'm usually talking as my characters. Not even on purpose. #c1books

It's a little past 4:30 EST, Thank you so much Ashley Chappell for joining the twitter chat, it was great having you here #c1books

@C1Books Thanks so much for having me! It's been a fun discussion :-) #c1books
